Extension 2 Clinic in Gaborone will be closed from April to October for a P4 million facelift into a 'model' clinic, according to Primary Health Care Manager, Goitsemang Boiteto.

She said this was permanent secretary for local government, Gabaake Gabaake's idea. His vision is that the clinic should meet the needs of Gaborone people and have world class equipment.

She said even the staff's attitude needs to be remoulded to acceptable levels. The staff did a five-day programme in public relations and customer care.

In the meantime patients in the Ext 2 catchment area will go to Bontleng Clinic. The majority of staff will reinforce Bontleng and the clinic will run for 24 hours.

Extension 2 is a pilot project because of its central location. The other clinics in Gaborone will get the same treatment.

Boiteto would not disclose the entire cost of the project that will run for the next three years starting with Block 9.

On average, Extension 2 clinic sees at least 4,000 patients a month and they expect that after the modifications the clinic will serve 5,000 patients.

The clinic makes initial observations and refers patients to Marina hospital. Gaborone has 15 clinics. Boiteto says the others outside Gaborone could come and copy the model.
