The Maun Local Police are complaining that the acute shortage of vehicles impedes them from tracing criminal suspects.

They only have three vehicles which they share with court clerks and chiefs in the densely populated Ngamiland district, including Maun and the peri-urban centres.

Inspector Motsamai Maitshoko says "we are failing to do our work satisfactorily and this results in members of the public, particularly complainants, spending the whole day in our offices waiting for us to bring suspected criminals to face the law". Inspector Maitshoko promised that to solve the problem they intend to ask for at least three more vehicles this financial year since they have qualified drivers with CTO licences.

Meanwhile a 24 year old cell phone thief, Kenosi Makoya, of Shashe in Maun was lashed three strokes on the buttocks after admitting to snatching a cell phone worth P699 on the evening of 12 February this year belonging to a woman, Kereng Tjibana of Thito ward.

The complainant managed to identify the accused and he was arrested. The cell phone was produced in the customary court as an exhibit during the trial. Presiding officer, Kgosi Oleyo Ledimo, ordered that the cell phone be returned to the owner and warned the accused to turn a new leaf and stop stealing other people's property.

In another criminal matter, Ompatile Goitsemang, a 27 year old man residing at Botshabelo ward, was sentenced to three strokes for unlawful wounding using an 'Okapi' knife on another man he suspected of having an affair with his girlfriend during a drinking spree at a shebeen.

Constable Ngetai Thabo prosecuted while Chief Ledimo presided over the case. The knife was seized by the state. The accused pleaded guilty to the offence.

Meanwhile, a 28 year old Zimbabwean, Meshack Mathe who allegedly stole a drill machine worth P154 at A to Z Wholesalers has disappeared and a warrant of arrest was issued in January this year, according to inspector Motsamai Maitshoko.
