It is unlikely that the construction of the Millennium Village will be completed as planed , owing to financial constraints and administrative hurdles that stand on the way, The Daily Monitor has learnt.
Reluctance shown by most of the regions in living up to their expectations have also contributed for the precarious situation the project is now found in.
The Millennium Village project was scheduled to be completed before it was inaugurated on this year's Ginbot 2o (May 28) celebrations marking the overthrow of Dergue Marxist regime.
The idea was for the village designed to look like a physical representation of the actual land of the country and regions would take their designated places to exhibit the components of every nation's culture, history, economy and also entertainment.
That would have been a great opportunity to promote investment and tourism for the regions and the country as a nation, experts close to the unfinished project say.
The day also highlights the recognition of the rights of nations and nationalities May 28, the Most regions have this was known at a meeting millennium village was supposed to be ready and inaugurated on May This village planned to build on Bole Kifle Ketma at Adwa Park in 160,000 plot of land and it has the shape of Ethiopian map with the cost of respectively 10 million Br.
According to Director of Addis Ababa Millennium Office, Kiros Hailesilase, the project was entangled with many problems.
One major problem, he said, was one that has to do with the ownership of the land.
"Our office doesn't have the right to take a land by itself; this is the major difficulties to get the land as planned and to make it happen rapidly,"Kiros said.
On this village 11 regions, including Addis Ababa and Dire Dawa will built their own village in the land which offered by the office. Regarding this the Southern Nations has get 27, 250.
He was speaking at a stakeholder meeting to deliberate on the problems that stand on the way for the realization of the millennium project.
On top of that, most regions are not ready to construct the Ethiopian millennium village because of the financial arrangements and lack of time for the construction of the temporary village, Kiros said.
"We believe that this village has a great role to initiate investment and tourism," Kiros added.
On a brighter note, Kiros said the Ethiopian Village and Addis Ababa millennium office in the village were well on track. They will not be opened on May (20), though.
Representatives drawn for all the regions attended the one day conference at the Sheraton Hotel.
Representatives of Tigray, Southern and Harrai region said they had budget and time limitations.
On the other hand, representative from Harari's raised critical questions about the sustainability and the difficulties on the construction of the village within the remaining, short period of time.
It is because of the time, the shortage of budget and manpower.
A representative from the Southern Nations and Nationalities regional state that the project was ambitions from their perspective.
He said the region will have to construct 56 small villages and that was "easier said than done." The meeting was closed with out any consensus owing to absence of regional presidents who would have more powers to make a decision.

They agreed however to arrange another meeting where more senior officials of the regions will participate.
No specific date was given for the meeting, just "another time," which casts suspicion as to fate of the project.
Murad Mohammed, the Director of Ethiopian Village hopes that May 28 will be the day of assurance for the construction of the village.
