Newly-appointed United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) Chief of Civil Affairs , Dr Francis Kai-Kai has promised to build on the legacy current Foreign Affairs Minister, Madam Zainab Bangura left while working in the same position in Liberia.

Dr Kai- Kai who replaced Zainab as Chief of Civil Affairs said over the weekend in the Liberian capital, "I know Zainab did a good job during the peace consolidation phase in Liberia. Lots were achieved during her tenure. I now have to build on her legacy and bring Civil Affairs to the next level within UNMIL's mandate." Speaking to Concord Times on his first full day in office, Kai-Kai who felt, " challenged and humbled" over his latest appointment stressed, "as a Sierra Leonean, it's a great opportunity to contribute to the consolidation and deepening of peace in a sister republic and our sub-region generally."

He adds, "it is also a positive acknowledgement of what Sierra Leoneans have done to advance peace, security and development since the end of the war in 2002." Asked on what Liberia stands to gain from him taking over from another Sierra Leonean, Zainab, the former Sierra Leone's DDR Executive Secretary said, "I'm ready to lead a team of dedicated Civil Affairs Officers to address the needs of Liberians within the framework defined by UNMIL's mandate." For him, "a peaceful Liberia with strong functional institutions at national and country levels will be good for the MRU and the rest of the sub-region." While stressing that he will do whatever he could to infuse a strong team spirit, dedication to goal achievement and, "strong sensitivity to the needs of our clientele - the Liberian Government and people," his challenge will however be, "Getting Liberians to own the peace process, capacity to deliver at all levels, cultivating support from all the many key stakeholders in Government and civil society, among others." Until recently, Kai-Kai was Chief of DDR with the United Nations Mission in Sudan (UNMIS) and several Liberians have already welcomed his appointment.
