The stalemate in the national assembly persists despite the election of Hon Irene Inankuyo as the First Vice President of this institution.

The plenary session that was due to take place today in order to validate the week's agenda lacked the required quorum. The new leadership of the national assembly has planned the registration of members of the parliament to different commissions. These permanent attributions would have taken place at the beginning of the February session. But the blockage that prevails in this institution has thwarted its activities.

Some members of the parliament find that the speaker of the national assembly is responsible for the failure of the session. While the session normally starts at 9 am, today, it ended at that time to the surprise of many.

The election of the new first vice president of the national assembly has not created a détente. It has become the basis of new blockage in this institution. The dissolution of the Frodebu parliamentarian group has become a new point of disagreement. Many MPs find that Hon Didace Kiganahe should not stay in the leadership of the Parliament after the chairman of the Frodebu parliamentarian group officially informed the speaker of the national assembly that his group no longer existed.

The recent attacks against opposition members of the parliament may not improve the situation in the national assembly. Although the ruling party has denied its implication in the attacks, ways that CNDD-FDD used to expel Alice Nzomukunda from the post of the first vice president of the parliament included withdrawing her security guards as well as the use of force to take back her service vehicles.
