Botswana: Majombolo Join Moloi Protests

Selebi-Phikwe — Nico United has become the third club to lodge a protest over the eligibility of striker Kekaetswe 'Mara' Moloi to play for Mascom Premier League title favourites Mochudi Centre Chiefs.

Majombolo filed their protest soon after their 1-0 loss to Chiefs a fortnight ago. Other clubs that have protested that Moloi had left Chiefs and joined Gaborone United are Township Rollers and BMC.

Nico spokesman, Etlhomilwe Raditshego said yesterday that their protest is based on the fact that the player transferred twice in a season contrary to regulations. Chiefs fielded Moloi when the log leaders beat Nico. If Chiefs are found guilty, they are likely to be docked points for games in which the Under-23 player featured. Moloi is reported to have briefly transferred to GU in January before making a quick return to the log leaders.

If he is found to be ineligible to play for Chiefs, it would be a heavy blow to the club's title aspirations in the event the Premier League Committee (PLC) deducts points from the Kgatleng giants. Botswana Football Association (BFA) rules and regulations stipulate that a club that uses an ineligible player will be docked points and/or pay a fine.

PLC secretary, Setete Phuthego was quoted in the press as saying that there has never been a dispute concerning Moloi. Protesting clubs have argued that the matter is supposed to be referred to the Player's Status Committee for resolution. GU has denied that they have any dispute with Chiefs over the player. Chiefs must keep their fingers crossed hoping that things go well.

Docking points from Chiefs might throw the title race wide open. Currently, an unbeaten Chiefs have virtually wrapped up the title. Magosi have been invincible since the start of the season and remain and look set to bag their first major soccer title.
