Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Local Government, Gabaake Gabaake, speaking at the end of a five-day programme for health workers on public relations and customer care run by IDM last Friday, said they can be better than the private sector given their training, equipment and facilities.

He urged clinic staff to be ambitious and creative. Their facilities should be places where patients can get early diagnosis, he pointed out. Gabaake said their role was to prevent diseases without waiting until people were sick.

He said to improve they should invite evaluation and criticism from the public. Gabaake said they should find opportunities in the area of HIV, as some have already done with their experience in Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission (PMTCT). They found work in other countries as consultants.

Senior consultant in communication and public relations at IDM, Goodwill Motlhabane, said the programme gives skills to the health staff so as to promote their image and cultivate a positive reputation.

The course is designed to foster effective communication that will satisfy and get feedback from customers. The course is also designed to help them in events management and interpersonal skills.

A total of 32 staff members, nurses, doctors, a lay counsellor and pharmaceutical, laboratory and x-ray technicians were awarded certificates.

Motlhabane says this was the second group of trainees and they intend to train industrial class employees.
