The Social Democratic Front, SDF, has proposed Cardinal Christian Tumi, Archbishop of Douala, as chairperson of 12 members of Elections Cameroon, ELECAM.

ELECAM would be charged with the registration, distribution of voters' cards and control of elections.This was the contents of a message of a three-man delegation dispatched by Fru Ndi and headed by Hon. Cyprian Awudu Mbaya, to meet the Prime Minister, Ephraim Inoni, as part of ongoing consultations to the appointment of members of ELECAM.

According to the SDF list, Prof. Joseph Owona, former Minister and Secretary General at the Presidency was proposed as vice chairperson. Other members include: Rt. Rev. Nyansako Ni Nku, Moderator, Presbyterian Church in Cameroon, PCC; Mgr. Francis Teke Lysinge, Bishop of Mamfe; El Hadj Ahmadou Bello, former General Manager of SNI and CAMAIR;

Barrister Ngassa Jean-Paul, a Douala-based Advocate; Rev. Bessala Mbesse, Moderator 51st AG/EPC; Dr. Zachary Enow Tanjong, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Social and Management Sciences of the University of Buea; Rev. Dr. Bame Bame, former Dean of the Yaounde Protestant Theology College; Mrs. Henriette Ekwe, former President of Transparency International Cameroon; El Hadj Mohamadou Awaloue, Director of CAMINSUR and David Abouem a Tchoyi, former Governor and former Secretary General at the Presidency.

In an attached note, Fru Ndi said because of the prevailing social tension resulting from the strike action by transporters, he could not respect an earlier appointment with the Prime Minister.

He applauded the agreeable attitude of the Prime Minister in postponing the meeting but said "unfortunately, recent pronouncements by members of your government in respect to my person and my party have made [it] unsafe for me to get on the road and drive to Yaounde."

The SDF Chairman stated that "the love for my people and my country, however, compels me and my party to participate in the ongoing consultations and I, therefore, forward to you...through the bearer our proposals containing 12 names for appointment as required by the law on ELECAM."

He, however, expressed scepticism as he declared: "I hope the list has not been drawn as usual and we are playing to the gallery."A source told The Post that the SDF was bent on making its proposal known to the public in order to avoid criticisms that the party condones government action behind the scenes when it comes to public matters.
