Elite of New Bell (Douala II) have taken a decision to create an information centre in the area to assist unemployed youths to attain self-employment or find jobs.

This resolution was adopted for urgent implementation at a forum which was conceived and organised by the CPDM MP of Wouri South (Douala II), Joseph Owona Kono on March 6.

The theme of the forum; "Peace and Youths Unemployment" was attended by traditional, municipal, religious and political authorities as well as elite, youths and consultants in the Subdivision.

Some officials of opposition parties present included the Deputy Secretary General of the SDF, Moukouri Moulema, and the Administrative Secretary of MANIDEM, Banda Kani.

In a welcome address, the moderator of the forum, Dr. Raymond Mbadiffo (Douala University lecturer), paid tribute to the youths of New Bell whom he noted took the government by surprise by abstaining from the acts of vandalism that gripped Douala from February 25 to 28.

Mbadiffo was elated to note that though the New Bell youths demonstrated, not one window pane was broken in the entire municipality neither was there any reported case of looting.

Hon. Kono said the youths bitterly told him that many of them were without jobs and blasted the elite of New Bell for abandoning them.

The MP said he had given his promise to the youths that he would rally the elite of New Bell for a dialogue on how the elders could assist them (youths) to stand on their own feet.

He said with the New Bell youths having kept to their own part of the promise not to indulge in vandalism during the strike, he too, went rapidly to work to meet up with his own part of the promise.

Some elite made a number of proposals at the meeting towards assisting New Bell unemployed youths. A business magnate, El Hadj Relouanou (Wouri II CPDM Section President), for example, proposed to Kono to convene another meeting of big business operators in the Subdivision for them to discuss the possibility of recruiting some of the unemployed youths. The proposal was saluted and registered.

The elite also concerted among themselves as to how to jointly assist unemployed youths in the municipality. When they returned to the hall, Kono announced that they had decided to create an information centre.

He said all the elite in the municipality and friends of Douala II would contribute towards the funds to set up and run the project. Kono also announced that professionals will be recruited for the centre. All in all, the elite came up with a package dubbed "New Bell Declaration."
