Population begins raising funds to rehabilitate the Bafang CPDM party House and Kekem Sub-divisional Office burnt down during transporters strike.
The people of Upper Nkam Division in the West Province are currently raising funds to rehabilitate the Cameroon People's Democratic Movement (CPDM) party House in Bafang and Kekem Sub-divisional Office, burnt down on the night of 27 February 2008. They are bitter that the money to be used in rehabilitating these structures built through their sweat, would have been used in other development projects in the Division. Indeed, besides the two public buildings, vandals took advantage of transporters strike of 25 to 28 February 2008 to attack the Court in Bafang, burn tyres on the main road, and looted fuel filling stations.
The Minister of Water Resources and Energy, Jean Bernard Sindeu, an elite of Upper Nkam Division, on Sunday, 9 March 2008 toured the Kekem, Bandja, Bana, Bakou and Bafang Subdivisions and Banwa District to see for himself the wounds the strike inflicted on the Division and recommend proactive measures against future disorder. Everywhere, Jean Bernard Sindeu and his entourage went, the population through the various speeches and the respective declarations condemned the violence and destruction of State and private property. The CPDM party officials, elite and population of all the administrative units addressed motions of support and encouragement to President Paul. In Bana, Bandja, Bakou and Banwa where no violent acts were committed, Mr Sindeu congratulated and thanked the population for blocking access to the vandals and called for permanent vigilance.
Bafang and Kekem
In these two localities affected by the strike, Mr Sindeu told the people, " I have come so that together we can condemn all acts of vandalism and violence whatever its source. We have to give privilege to dialogue in the quest for social peace". According to him, " The Head of State has already quenched the fire". He said President Paul Biya during the Council of Ministers' meeting of Friday, gave a response to the cries of the population through measures taken to increase civil servants' salaries, rents allowances, cancellation of customs duties on some goods of basic necessity, all in a bid to raising the living standards of Cameroonians. For the trickle down effects of the measures to be felt and remain forever, the population must settle down to hard work and block the way to all acts of violence and destruction of State and private property. Parents, Jean Bernard Sindeu advised, should educate and moralise youths against intoxication and acts of vandalism. The Upper Nkam population took the commitment to henceforth double vigilance measures and adopt more coordinated actions to nib future disorder and acts of vandalism at the bud. The raising of funds to rehabilitate the CPDM party House and the Kekem Sub-divisional Office started during the Minister's tour continues. Funds collection committees were created in all administrative units of the Division.
