Prime Minister Ephraim Inoni yesterday got the proposals of traditional rulers on the constitution of ELECAM board.
The Prime Minister, Head of Government, Ephraim Inoni yesterday, 12 March rounded off the consultations with leaders of political parties represented at the National Assembly and those of the civil society in view of selecting the 12 members of the board of the independent electoral body, Elections Cameroon (ELECAM). The 29 December 2006 law putting in place ELECAM specified that the institution becomes effectively functional by June 2008.
In order to select the members of the ELECAM board, Prime Minister Ephraim Inoni on the instructions of the Head of State, for over three weeks carried out consultations with the aim of getting proposals on the calibre of the people. Leaders of the associations of traditional rulers from the ten provinces of Cameroon were at the Star Building yesterday with their proposals.
After discussions with the Prime Minister behind close doors, the President of the South West Chiefs Conference who is also the traditional ruler of Ekondo Titi in Ndian Division, Chief Esoh Itoh talked to the press. He expressed happiness that the Prime Minister invited traditional rulers so that together they could discuss current issues affecting Cameroon with particular attention on the designation of ELECAM board members. According to the traditional rulers, "ELECAM should be an independent electoral body to satisfy the needs of the people of Cameroon. It has to be put in place with people of moral probity, who have the courage to stand what it takes to be in such an organ", Chief Esoh Itoh said. The traditional rulers proposed that ELECAM board members should be "people who will speak the truth without fear or favour. People who have passed through the mill and recognised as people who can stand for Cameroon", Chief Esoh Itoh specified.
Traditional rulers would want the designation of ELECAM board members to be treated with the seriousness highlighted by the Head of State. As custodians of the culture, the traditional rulers, according to Chief Esoh Itoh would want the population to have trust in the people finally selected. He said, "people should be prepared when the time comes to accept the elections results that ELECAM would publish".
