Harare — Orchestra Mberikwazvo, the sungura outfit that Alick Macheso assembled a decade ago after he parted ways with Khiama Boys, has clocked a decade.
Despite the band not marking its anniversary in recent weeks owing to international commitments, promoters, well-wishers and friends have taken that responsibility to honour their major "cash cow". Pamuzinda Highway X-scape, who last year presented Macheso with a beast and two goats for his achievements over the years, felt they have not done enough to complement the artiste.
"We are happy to be associated with Macheso when he marks his 10th anniversary. As Pamuzinda, we are grateful to be hosting his party tonight and we hope to make it a big occasion. "We have also invited Sulumani Chimbetu and Progress Chipfumo to come and support their brother (Macheso) at the eventful occasion where we expect all sungura lovers to show up," he said. Victor "Godfather" Chiraga the owner of the joint urged all Orchestra Mberikwazvo followers to grace the occasion, which he said they had always wanted to see. "Fans have been asking us through our marketing department to do something for Macheso and we have finally done that by organising his 10th anniversary. "The occasion is also special in that it would be Macheso's first performance after he conquered Australia two weeks ago," he added. Even Macheso's right-hand man-turned-manager William Tsandukwa was also ecstatic that his band had been doing well over the years and urged fans to come in their numbers to mark the big occasion.
"It's one of our special shows as a band and we hope to keep on working hard. As you know, the company has grown bigger and for us it's a challenge that we have. But we are confident we shall keep on working hard," he said. Assembled towards the end of 1997, the band became operational the following year, in February 1998 with the help of Shepherd Chinyani.
Since then, Macheso has recorded seven albums that have propelled him to stardom. Macheso's discography comprises Magariro, Vakiridzo, Simbaradzo, Zvakanaka Zvakadaro, Zvido Zvenyu Kunyanya, Vapupuri Pupurai and his latest offering Ndezvashe-eh!
