Four days into the self-imposed strike by the Association of table water producers, the Lagos metropolis is still littered with empty sachets of "pure water".

A correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) who visited some areas in Lagos yesterday reports that most canals and roads were littered with empty water sachets.

The association had on Monday ordered its members to stop production for one week in order to clear the Lagos metropolis of "pure water" satchets.

The development has forced an increase in the price of a satchet of 'pure water' from N5 to N10 in the metropolis.

A canal which runs from Surulere to Orile, was blocked by the satchets and other refuse dumps, with some sections covered by weeds.

At Ogunlana Drive, heaps of sachets already packed in some sacks belonging to one of the 'pure water' producers, have yet to be evacuated from the roadside.

The situation was also the same in other areas like Apapa Road, Oyingbo, Apongbon, CMS and Mushin.

A dealer who spoke under anonymity, blamed the Ministry of Environment, which, he said, had been contracted to clear the streets, drains and canals of the satchets.

"The association had an agreement with the ministry to help in clearing the canals, roads and the different factories," he said.
