NIGERIA yesterday called on members of the international community to assist in the resettlement of its citizens in Bakassi region.
Prince Bola Ajibola, the leader of Nigeria delegation to the Cameroon-Nigeria Mixed Commission made the call at the opening of its 21st meeting in Yaounde.
According to him, "activities are on-going in the New Bakassi within Akpabuyo Local Govt Area of Nigeria, being the new resettlement for Nigerians formerly in Bakassi."
"Now is the time to call on members of the International Community to further extend their goodwill by donating generously toward this worthy cause.
"The time has come to embark on visiting many of our development partners and donor countries to further seek international support for the implementation and completion of the ongoing demarcation of boundaries.
"We hope that very soon necessary action will be taken on this matter," he said.
Ajibola noted that Mixed Commission had been able to move from rhetorics to action in its quest to establish peace between the two countries.
He added that both countries had been able to demonstrate to the international community that they could resolve boundary dispute amicably.
Ajibola who said that phases one and two of the field exercise had been concluded added that phase three being the last would be addressed at the end of the 21st meeting. "It is hoped that the 21st session of the Mixed Commission will advance the fulfilment of our mandate with regard to issues pertaining to our on-going field assessment on the land boundary.
"It is also hoped that issues pertaining to the remaining aspects of maritime boundary will be discussed and concluded during this session," Ajibola assured.
He assured of the Commission's determination and readiness to get over Bakassi Peninsula issue in due course in spite of the delay experienced by the observer group in adhering to the time frame of visitation.
"I want to reiterate here that Nigeria is putting all that is within its disposal in place to ensure a smooth pull out from the rest of Bakassi in August 2008.
"This was in pursuant to the Greentree Agreement signed in New York in 2006," he said.
Ajibola noted some of the areas where actions had been taken to include issues of resuscitating the Cameroon-Nigeria Joint Commission, and high level interstates visits.
Other areas are, the implementation of the inter African Highway projects as well as solving Lake Chad Basin Commission's problem.

He said this would be done by transferring water from the Obangui River to the Basin, adding that Nigeria was still committed to the full implementations of these plans.
