Nigeria: Globacom Commissions Optic Fibre Backbone

Lagos — Globacom's efforts to provide excellent telecommunications services to Nigerians got a huge boost yesterday as the National Operator launched the Onitsha-Awka-Enugu route of its nationwide Optic Fibre Cable backbone.

The project was commissioned by the Anambra State Governor, Dr. Peter Obi, at the Enugu-Onitsha Express Way, Onitsha. The Governor led the State Executive Council accompanied by the Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe to the event.

The Optic Fibre backbone is an advanced information highway that transmits voice and data at the speed of light. It also provides large bandwidth for offices and corporate organizations. The Onitsha-Awka-Enugu leg is part of the nationwide Optic Fibre backbone Glo is building across the country.

Speaking at the launching ceremony, Governor Peter Obi said the efforts of Globacom to change the face of telecommunications by providing world class telecom services were quite commendable. According to Gov Obi, Anambra has the biggest and largest market after Lagos, hence the launch of the infrastructure in the state has become strategic to commercial activities in the state and the entire south east in general.

Gov Obi urged the management of Globacom to continue the good work it was doing in the telecoms industry, noting that the sky was the limit. "We are happy that the optic fibre facility will grow business in the state. Onitsha and Nnewi businesses are growing rapidly.

Onitsha has the third highest number of bank branches and third highest in deposits. This shows the size of business in the state. We therefore welcome this noble endeavour by Globacom to boost our business as well as e-governance in Anambra State, " the governor said.

In his own speech at the occasion,the acting Chief Operating Officer,Glo Broad Access, Mr Martins Olowonihi, said the Globacom revolution in the telecoms industry continues with the launch of the Onitsha section of the Optic Fibre backbone. He said with the commissioning, the government and the people of Anambra State and other neigbouring states will witness a revolution in voice and data transfers.

"You now have a much faster transmission of data, voice, broadband internet and multimedia services over a range of frequencies. This will significantly transform the economy of Anambra and empower its people," he said. He pointed out that the fibre cable network has already covered the entire Lagos-Abeokuta-Ibadan route,Lagos-Ijebu Ode-Ore-Benin-Sapele-Warri-Kaima(Yenogoa junction)-Port Harcourt-Aba-Owerri-Enugu route and the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano-Minna routes.

The ceremony was attended by people from all walks of life and it included the Obi of Onitsha, His Highness,Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe, Col. ED Amah, Commander 302 Artillery Regiment, Nigerian Army Onitsha and the zonal manager, Globacom South East,Mr Chidi Nwogu among others.
