Namibia: Gallery to Host Independence Art Exhibition Next Week

Windhoek — The National Art Gallery of Namibia is hosting a John Muafangejo Art Centre (JMAC) Independence Exhibition of students and artist's art works. This exhibition will be celebrating the 20th anniversary of JMAC, as well as the 18th Independence anniversary of the Republic of Namibia.

The exhibition will be officially opened on March 20 and will run until April 4, it was announced in a press release.

Historically, the JMAC was started and initiated by the Arts Association of Namibia, now National Art Gallery of Namibia, in 1988 as a project funded from the German government. It was named after and created in commemoration and to honour the late Muafangejo, father of Namibian printmaking. It was the wish of the artist, Muafangejo, that young black Namibians have the opportunity to pursue informal art education and training.

The John Muafangejo Art Centre focusses on tuition in different styles and mediums, using a practical approach in all the courses offered. The exhibition showcases artworks by last year's first, second and third year students, taking a look at artworks created during classes as well as workshops, in the medium of textile design, printmaking, ceramics, drawing and mixed media.

This exhibition will offer students the opportunity to experience the process of public interest and exposure to a broader audience and will be officially opened by Elise Heikkinen, Programme Officer at the Embassy of Finland.
