Cameroon: Conviviality, Optimism Characterise Plenary

Members of Parliament are bracing up to effectively contribute to the consolidation of peace, democracy and stability, all needed to make Cameroon more credible and prominent internationally. They will be abiding to the appeal of the eldest Member of Parliament, Mboui Joseph who chaired the opening plenary session of the first March ordinary session of the eighth legislative period of Cameroon's National Assembly.

The commitment of the MPs to work for the progress of the country was manifested through their massive presence at the opening plenary session. It was the first time MPs from all the political parties represented in Parliament were meeting after the November 2007 budgetary session. They indeed exchanged ideas on the experiences in their constituencies and talked among themselves about the current issues in the country.

It rained cats and dogs shortly before the plenary but the curious Yaounde population and journalists braved the rough weather to witness the ceremony. Prime Minister Ephraim Inoni led the delegation of members of government to Parliament whose presence Hon. Mboui said, translated the collaboration between the executive and legislative arms of government. The journalists at the plenary session waited anxiously for the end to interview MPs on their expectations concerning the session, paying particular attention to the recent transporters strikes that resulted to the death of 40 Cameroonians and destruction of both State and private property, the Head of State's measures to raise the living standards of Cameroonians and the current debate on constitutional amendment.

What is certain is that serious work will only start in Parliament after the election of the bureau that will pilot the affairs of the House for the 2008 legislative year. In the meantime, the provisional bureau composed of the eldest MP and the two youngest MPs will pilot deliberations in Parliament till a permanent bureau is voted. The members of the Second Verification Board will get down to work today. They will examine the file of the alternate of Hon. Eken Christophe, CPDM Member of Parliament for the Upper Nkam Division in the West Province. Eken Christophe was recently appointed the Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce, a post which is incompatible with that of MP.
