Monrovia — Members of the House of Senate Thursday unanimously rejected Chief Justice Johnnie N. Lewis' request seeking for permission to construct a fence around the Temple of Justice.

In a letter addressed to the august body, Chief Justice Lewis requested the Lawmakers to allow him raise the height of the fence in order to secure the premises.

He said the construction of fence around the Temple of Justice would be in the best interest of both the Judiciary and the Capitol.

But the Senators argued that fencing and raising the height of the premises would deny people the opportunity from viewing the beauty of the Temple of Justice.

Bong County Senator Jewel Taylor and Senator John Ballout of Maryland County explained that individuals who constructed the Temple of Justice wanted the public to see its beauty, and there was no need to fence in the building.

The Senators maintained that the fence of the Temple of Justice should remain like the Executive Mansion and the Capitol.

For his part, River Gee County Senator Isaac Johnson criticized his colleagues for rejecting the Chief Justice's request.

He said the Chief Justice decided to raise the height of the fence around the Temple of Justice because on several occasions, there have been reports of continuous theft.

The Senator further maintained that the Chief Justice has the right to fence his area, adding, "let us not be selfish to our colleagues."
