The Accelerated Learning Program (ALP) of the Norwegian Refugee Council-Liberia (NRC) recently held a two-day inter-sport meet among 20 ALP schools in Garwula and the commonwealth districts of Grand cape Mount County.

The sporting events which were aimed at promoting primary education and to identify the skills of children, also served as an awareness campaign targeted at parents and the communities about the existence of the free accelerated learning program in the county.

According to a release from the NRC, the events were witnessed by government officials, community leaders, UNMIL civil affairs personnel in the county and representatives of some international non-governmental organizations.

The 20 participating schools were divided into four groups including Vero House, represented by the Yellow Color; Carsten House, represented by Blue Color; Lorna House, represented by Green Color and Fred House, represented by Red Color.

The various houses were named in honor of the various managers of NRC-Liberia.

At the climax of the sporting events, Vero House named in honor of Madam Veronique Ringot, Project Manager of the ALP won the tournament.

"I want you children to be happy; put behind you the memories of the war and enjoy yourselves," Ms. Ringot said.

NRC started an education program in Liberia in January 2003 by implementing the Rapid Response Education Program (RREP) in IDPs camps in Montserrado County. After few months, the NRC expanded its activities to Grand Cape Mount, Bomi and Gbarpolu counties.

The release said the RREP could not respond to long-term educational needs of the children so, when the government of Liberia, in collaboration with UNICEF introduced the Accelerated Learning Program in 2005, NRC transformed the RREP to ALP in April 2005.

The accelerated learning program seeks to ensure that children complete the six years of primary school in three years period.

Speaking during the program, Garwula District Education Officer Moses Paul noted that in the absence of enough resources from government to construct more schools throughout the country, NRC intervention in the educational sector was highly commendable.

He also lauded the cordial working relationship among local government administrators, community leaders and the NRC local staff in the county.
