Luanda — Journalists and physicians from Angola, Namibia, Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Mozambique will participate, as from March 29, in the excursion to Zambezi River, dubbed "Zambezi Expedition to roll back malaria", aimed at fighting against the disease.
Addressing journalists on Friday, in Luanda, the co-ordinator of the media associated with the project, the Zambian Berry Lwando explained that the trip will last two months to draw the attention on the problems associated with the struggle against malaria in the six Zambezi regions.
The expedition will start at Cazombo locality, Angola's eastern Moxico province, and will follow the course of the river to the other five countries, during which the teams shall distribute mosquito nets and medicines in the communities they visit, and the physicians will carry out diagnosis tests and house-to-house insecticide spraying.
Berry Lwando said that, for the first time this year, April 25 shall be commemorated as the International Malaria Awareness Day.
The Angolan Government and the Programme of Combat to Malaria will be responsible for transport and selection of the personnel to participate in expedition.
The "Roll Back Malaria" project, of the World Health Organisation (WHO), started in1998.
The activity is being sponsored by Oil company Exxon-Mobil, Coca-Cola Africa, Medicine for Malaria, among others organisations.
