Gaborone — The newly formed Botswana Primary School Sports Association (BOPSSA) will hold its first athletics competitions in six educational regions this weekend.

The competition will be held in Maun, Francistown, Serowe, Jwaneng, Molepolole and Orapa Sports Stadiums. BOPSSA spokesman, Edward Moreti said ball games will be held in second term where only three disciplines will feature - football, netball and volleyball. He promised that they will consider other sports as the association grows. In third term, BOPSSA plans a multi-sport competition. The core mandate of BOPSSA is to administer sports at primary school level.

Moreti said that it is important that children are introduced to sports at an early age. He hoped that with the formation of the association, sports in primary schools will be run more effectively. He said the association will help primary school sports to obtain grants that they could not get from the Botswana National Sports Council (BNSC). Before BOPSSA came into existence, sports at primary schools was run by Botswana Teachers Union (BTU)'s welfare committee.

BOPSSA has two structures - operations and administration. Moreti said the association will take care of all the government primary schools. The private schools can apply to be members.

"We will see how we can incorporate them in the system," he said. Moreti said as a new body, they lack funds and what they get from the government is not enough. This means they must seek sponsors. Moreti encouraged schools to register in large numbers with BOPSSA.
