Kaduna — In a bid to stop gas flaring and generate adequate electricity to boost industrial development, the Kaduna State Government is set to build a gas powered 900-megawatts power plant to serve Kaduna and some North Western states, according to the state governor.

Governor Mohammed Namadi Sambo said the power plant project which will tap from a 48 inches gas pipeline that will run from Abuja through Kaduna to Kano, has been approved by President Umaru Musa Yar'adua and will be constructed by Korean consultants in Kaduna.

Speaking at the Kaduna State Peace and Security Colloquium which held Thursday at General Hassan Usman Katsina's House, Kawo, in Kaduna, Sambo said the project is one of the development programmes embarked upon by the state to generate employment for the people, noting that there can be no peace and security if there is no development but poverty and unemployment in the society.

Sambo added that in line with government aspirations for the development of its people, the Kaduna State University will be transformed into a science university with a full faculty of medicine and trainings in medical sciences and air space technology.

"The president has approved the project to provide gas pipeline to Kaduna State. The consortium of Korean contractors made the presentation in my office yesterday (Wednesday). The 48 inches gas pipeline will run from Abuja through Kaduna to Kano and a 900-megawatt power plant will be constructed to provide electricity for Kaduna and other North West states. A piece of land has been made available for the project which is expected to provide energy to power our industries back to life.

Addressing the occasion, chairman of the colloquium and the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Mohammed Sa'ad Abubakar, commended the organisers, saying that the cardinal goal of the colloquium is to cross fertilise ideas and experiences among different components of the society.

The Sultan who spoke through the Emir of Zazzau, Alhaji Shehu Idris, said lack of peace begets fear, worries and hostilities
