Gambia: U.S. Army Reservist Threantens To Kill Freedom Newspaper Editor

15 March 2008

Raleigh, North Carolina — A United States Army Reservist and also a Data Base Systems Administrator at Sprint, Gheran Senghore has threatened to kill the Freedom Newspaper, Managing Editor Pa Nderry MBai. Mr. Senghore who left a voicemail on Mr. MBai's cellular phone Friday, said Mr. MBai's days were numbered as he vowed to take the journalist's life. Senghore who resides in Kansas said he was going to be in Raleigh to deal with the Editor of the Freedom Newspaper. He was apparently unhappy with recent internet investigations, linking him to the malicious emails earlier sent to the Editor of Freedom, in which the writer smeared the image of the Mbai family.

Gheran Senghore left two voicemails on the MBai's answering machine. " I am coming to Raleigh to kill you. You want to mess with me. I am coming to deal with you SUMARAKAGI PA NDERRY MBAI. SACHAPANDEY." Gheran rained insults on Editor Mbai.

For legal reasons, we refrained from returning Senghore's phone call. He has not only trespasses our Editor, but had also threatened him with death.

Reacting to the developments, our fearless Editor said " Gheran sounds like a desperate man. I am here in Raleigh. I look forward seeing him. I fear only God. He is making the fool of himself by making such threats. I ran from persecution from my native country, The Gambia. It's interesting that I am once again being persecuted by a United States Gambian naturalized soldier. Gheran should bear in mind that this is not the Gambia, but the United States. If he had the daring mind to violate the rule of law in this country, army ethics and kill a legally resident Gambian asylee, then the ball is on his court. I don't think Great America will allow that to happen. We are being threatened with death because of our journalistic work. We have evidence to substantiate our statements." Said Editor MBai

Editor MBai said Gheran's "unprofessional conduct does represent the position of the US Army. US soldiers are well mannered and disciplined. Even my six year old daughter will not behave as Gheran did on the phone. If he is aggrieved with what the Freedom Newspaper had reported, let him take us to court. Issuing death threats and insults will not solve the problem. We are going to contact the Army Command and other relevant authorities to register a complaint against Gheran Senghore. America is not a land for persecutors. If he believes in killing as his main resort, he better think twice. You don't threaten a journalist and get away with it. Gheran Senghore would be held responsible for the death of Pa Nderry M'Bai. We are documenting this report for posterity." Said Editor MBai
