Arab civil society organisations have expressed their "deep concern" about the increasing number of humanitarian crises in the region as a result of armed conflicts, calling the leaders participating in the OIC summit in Dakar to take "strong actions" to cope with them.
"The Arab and African countries have experienced massacres, systematic extermination of civilians, fires of villages, hunger and increase in the number of displaced people and refugees," the organisations says in a message copied to the APS on Friday.
The text, signed by 31 organisations from 7 countries (Egypt, Bahrain, Jordan, Yemen, Palestine, Sudan, Syria), cites Palestine, Darfour, Iraq and Lebanon as being among the most affected countries.
"We urge Your Excellencies to intensify your diplomatic efforts," the organisations say, stressing "the need to take bold commitments during the OIC summit in late March 2008 on the implementation of strong actions to respond to humanitarian crises and work more closely with the international community at large."
"There are situations of extreme humanitarian crises going against he hopes of the civil society concerning the respect of human rights, compliance with the international humanitarian law and protection of civilians in the conflicts," the message stresses.

As far as Darfour is concerned, the human rights activists said that "further consistency is need among Islamic leaders" and "international coordination must be more significant."
"The OIC summit is a key opportunity, which must be as a starting point to the implementation of strong actions," the civil society organisations contend.
About Palestine, they put forward the year 2008 expected to be the year of hope, with the resumption of peace talks, according to the human rights defenders.
