Christians in Cameroon yesterday joined other Christians in the world over to celebrate Palm Sunday. The celebration is in remembrance of the triumphant entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem six days before his crucifixion.

The day was marked by church services and prayers in churches. Palm Sunday also marks the beginning of the Holy Week. It is the last lap towards the Easter celebrations. During this period Christians meditate more on the Pascal mystery of Christ. According to Father Jean Mebenga, of St Kisito Parish in Mvog-Mbi, a Younde neighbourhood, the Easter Tridum is the decisive stage because it represents the peak of the liturgical year as it contains the essentials of all church celebrations. He explained that celebrating Palm Sunday Christians are celebrating two events: the triumphant entry into Jerusalem and the passion of Christ. "With palms we form a procession. It is the church that acclaims Christ who is with us. He is alive and resurrected," he said.

According Father Jean Mebenga, Christ was obedient till death. He therefore enjoined Christians to accept to suffer for Christ and not give up in times of sufferings but should have confidence that God is leading them to glory. On this day Christians relive all what Christ suffered from Holy Thursday to Easter Sunday. "We are not doing this in sorrow but in thanksgiving in the sense that Jesus Christ gives salvation which no other person can give," he said.
