Speaker of Parliament Edward Ssekandi gives Janet an award for her outstanding role in fighting HIV/AIDS. This was in Rakai during the event to mark 25 years of the disease

THE youth should abstain from pre-marital sex to avoid contracting HIV/AIDS, the First Lady, Mrs. Janet Museveni, has advised.

She was addressing the Kampala International University western students' association on reproductive health on Saturday in Kampala.

Janet, who urged the students to excel in academic work to prepare for the national challenges, also emphasised personal discipline and the need to make the right decisions in life.

On the AIDS pandemic, she lamented the fact that the death rate in sub-Saharan Africa was very high. The region accounts for almost two-thirds of the people infected with the disease and 72% of global deaths, according to the 2006 UNAIDS update.

The First Lady commended the chairman board of trustees of the university, Hassan Basajjabalaba, for opening an institution that was providing education to many Ugandans and students from other countries.
