It was all cheers and toasts when Botswana's leading pay television service provider Multichoice announced its intentions to sponsor a knockout tournament for Gaborone golfers last Friday.

The announcement of the SuperSport Club Match Play Competition was made at the Gaborone Golf Club (GGC). The weekly event is expected to start in early May and end in September.

Multichoice general manager Billy Sekgororwane told Monitor Sport at the event that they will spend about P30,000 in sponsoring the competition for amateur golfers. He said that SuperSport is a premier sports channel on Multichoice and so it should immensely contribute to sports activities. "We are hoping to take this competition to greater heights. We hope to make it an annual event," stressed Sekgororwane. He explained that though it might start smaller, they believe the competition will grow into a national activity in the coming years, so long as the inaugural edition is a success.

The winner of the tournament would walk away with a floating trophy and other goodies. Since this will be a knockout tournament every weekend, winners in each stage take home prizes. This means that by the time the tournament ends, the ultimate winner would have collected a number of prizes including the big one.

Sekgororwane indicated that SuperSport intends to create big events in the country, as they have already done elsewhere. "Even if it is small, the fact that it is sponsored by Multichoice makes it bigger," said Sekgororwane. He explained that as time goes, they will make it an open competition to attract international players.

About 102 golfers are expected to take part in the inaugural edition of the competition after the draw was done last Friday. GGC team captain Jorgen Hasseriis was happy that golf has got another big catch in Multichoice sponsorship. "This is a huge catch for us. It is a very different competition that we have been craving for and we are now happy that we got it," he said.

He pointed out that it is really motivating to see sponsors coming on board to finance more golfing activities. He was delighted that since there are prizes every week, golfers would put up an inspired performance to win. This will make the Super Sport Club Match Play Competition more exciting.
