A massive campaign is expected to start this week to clean-up Gaborone. The campaign involves the community, the Gaborone City Council (GCC), Local Government and World Group of Companies.

A member of the publicity committee at GCC, Dorcas Tsamai, said the campaign dubbed 'Clean environment is my heart beat - keep Gaborone clean' is expected to help clear litter, rubble and general waste around the city. She said they will sensitise the public that it is not healthy to live in a dirty environment.

Tsamai said when the campaign was launched last year, they wanted to cover the whole of Gaborone at once but this proved unwise. Hence this year, they have decided to divide the city into five areas and clean every two months until November. The areas are Gaborone West North, Gaborone North, Gaborone West South, Gaborone South and Gaborone Central.

The business community, football clubs and schools are expected to take part in the campaign.

Another committee member, David Atlholang, said that people who deliberately caused littering make the city filthy. "They say that they are creating employment for others," he said.

The members of the publicity committee feel that because public education has been held, the law need to be enforced against littering. "It is everyone's challenge to keep the city clean. Otherwise we are sitting on a time bomb," Dorcas Mpedi said.

The campaign starts on March 18 and 19 in Gaborone West North. It is hoped the clean-up will be an annual event as the committee wants Gaborone to be one of the cleanest in SADC by 2016. "We need the support of the media and the youth in this campaign," Mpedi said.
