Botswana Athletics Association (BAA) president Moses Bantsi has said local women are doing relatively well in coaching and technical issues of the sport.

He asserted that a number of women have attended training at different levels as coaches and what is remaining is for them to become visible. "What we need from them is to be more visible and not be overcome by their male counterparts. They should play critical roles and be role models to girls so as to encourage them to participate in athletics," he said at the BAA Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Saturday. He said there is need to increase women participation in the sport to adhere to the world athletics plan.

He is worried that though a good number of talented girls are doing well at junior schools, they disappear when they graduate to the senior level. He explained that in their continued effort to encourage women participation not only in athletics but sports in general, they intend to organise camps and help them to qualify for major events. "We will send them to various competitions to gain more exposure," he promised.

The BAA intends to send some women athletes to high performance training centres. Some of the upcoming female athletes who will be closely monitored are Kgalalelo Sefo, Amuchilani Tumelano, Seonyatseng Nthompe, Goitsemodimo Dikinya and Khumoetsile Ngope. The athletics boss said there is need to introduce more athletics events. "This year BAA would like to see the introduction of events like hurdles and steeplechase. We believe that such events will bring the much-needed excitement to athletics spectators," Bansti said. He added that the walking race might be introduced in athletics competitions next year. This is because it has been made a mandatory event by the International Athletics Association Federation (IAAF). BAA has committed to intensify training judges and coaches for the new events in a bid to make athletics the number one sport in the country.

Bantsi informed the meeting that there is need to act timely on the amendments of the constitution. He said that the executive committee has already looked at the document and that it is now up to affiliates to make an input. "Some of the clauses that are not in the present constitution are mandatory by the IAAF and are in the draft. You have to go back to your members and seriously make an input which should be ready for adoption very soon," he said.
