Mrs. Josephine Atabong, a Buea Councilor, recently received a traditional title.The title of Mafuo Alemache Fomenky was given to her by Chief Fomenky S.N. in Molyko, during a New Year party of organised by the Menky Family Meeting, Buea Branch.
Chief Fomenky said Mrs. Atabong has done a lot in the socio-economic, political and cultural development of Menky village and so felt that her efforts should be recognised."For my 18 years on the throne, she has been very collaborative and given me a lot of support," the Chief said.
On why that particular title was given to her, the Chief Fomenky said: "Alemache was the late uncle of Mrs. Atabong who died without a child. "So, I decided to chose the name in order that it should continue to remind us of a family member who once lived."
Quizzed on what role the Chief expects her to play in this new position, the Fomenky said being a crowd puller, "I expect her to mediate in family disputes and unite people."The Chief did not fail to mention that the Buea Chapter of Menky Family Meeting has grown so well that it is the best functional branch in the country.
On her part, Mrs. Atabong said she was elated though taken by surprise. Hear her: "I never knew that crowning me was part of the agenda of today." She, however, thanked Chief Fomenky for the position conferred on her and pledged her total support to the Chief in particular and the general development of the Menky family.
Prior to the crowning ceremony, the President of Menky Family Meeting, Buea branch, Ndi Nkemnka-Ajuah, stressed the need for love and family unity.He disclosed that membership in the meeting has grown steadily and today there are 35 members.
Ndi Nkemnka-Ajuah pleaded with members to shun gossip and contribute ideas for the development of the meeting and the family.Mafuo Alemache, 43, became councilor in 2002. She is Secretary of the Education Committee of Buea Rural Council. She has taught for eleven years and a mother of four.
