Cameroon: Social Liberation Congress Advocates Constitutional Review

The Social Liberation Congress, SLC, party has said a revision of the constitution is necessary to move the nation in the right direction.

This is contained in a memo titled, Constitutional Review: The Social Liberation Congress Takes a Stand. The memo was signed on March 14, by the Secretary General of the SLC, Prof. Albert Azeyeh, in conformity to its base.

Going by the memo, the Republic of Cameroon is governed by two constitutions; the 1972 and 1996 constitutions. Against this backdrop, it states, 'the country is caught between two contending laws in which the often quoted 1996 constitution is applied only very selectively while many of its articles are yet to be implemented.'

The party maintains that a review of the existing constitution, undertaken within the framework of a constitutional conference, would yield a fundamental law that guarantees stability and the proper functioning of the institutions. According to Azeyeh, Cameroon is yet to emerge as a modern state. "A constitution that enjoys popular support is the only condition for this emergence," he added.
