Cameroon: Residence of SCNC Official Razed

Chris Mbunwe

17 March 2008

Fire recently gutted the residence of one-time Organising Secretary of the Southern Cameroons National Council, SCNC, Linus Moma, on Foncha Street, Bamenda.

The inhabitants of Foncha Street were restless and helpless as the fire consumed everything in Moma's house in the early hours of the morning. All efforts to put out the fire by the Bamenda Military Emergency Unit failed. Fortunately, Moma's household members escaped, albeit with severe injuries.

The fire incident seemed to ironically stoke Southern Cameroons' sentiments. Some SCNC officials were quick to lay blame on the door step of the administration given the harassment and torture inflicted on Moma and his family over the years.

Reliable information holds that Moma's children who are in the Diaspora are also targeted. Speaking to The Post by phone, the SCNC National Chairman,Chief Ayamba Ette Otun, described the incident as unfortunate and wondered when this harassment saga of SCNC will end.

"Leaders like late Stephen Ndi and a host of others have suffered same fate. You cannot count the number of times myself, Nfor Nfor, Mbinglo, Kongnso, Chinko and hundreds of others have been arrested, tortured and jailed because we are SCNC."

Despite all odds, Chief Ayamba assured SCNC activists in the Diaspora and at home to continue supporting the struggle."Who could believe that Eritrea, Kosovo would be independent today? Tomorrow, it will be the turn of Southern Cameroons.

Slowly and surely, we are moving towards it and the joy shall be ours and our people who have been suffering under the yoke of La République for over 43 years," said Ayamba.
