The Finance Controller for Meme, Johnson Kum Ofon, has estimated the damage caused on public structures in Kumba during the recent strike at over FCFA 695 million.
He said the value of the Treasury, Taxation, Basic Education, Employment and Vocational Training, Labour, Land Tenure, Social Affairs and police offices burnt down is above the 2008 investment credit (FCFA 695 million) for the Subdivision.
Kum said what took more than a decade to invest in Kumba was destroyed in a day. He said the destruction has taken Kumba some 18 years back. The Controller added that Meme Senior Divisional Officer, SDO, Magloire Abath Zangbwala, after a crisis meeting with the affected services, is trying to relocate them.
However, Kum stated that since Taxation and Treasury are financial institutions, they will endeavour to rehabilitate the buildings in the shortest possible time.He explained that the Meme Treasury had FCFA 20 million and Taxation FCFA 15 million for renovation in their 2008 investment credits.
The Controller prayed the Ministry to add money for the construction of a finance building in Kumba.Kum also suggested that government could rehabilitate abandoned structures in Kumba Station and transfer all government services there.
Reacting to the strike per se, the Controller said people have a right to demonstrate peacefully. He said once it is chaotic, it becomes an offence against the state. The Post learned at the Taxation office, the Chief of Centre, Magellan Issa Yadon sensed danger before the strike and reportedly kept all important documents and computers with useful information in safety.
Delegation Loses FCFA 7 M To "Rioters"
Meanwhile, the Meme Divisional Delegation of Social Affairs was one of the victims of rioters who poured out during the recent strike and caused considerable damage to both private and public property.
The rioters reportedly broke into the Social Affairs Delegation and stole FCFA 4 million in cash, and made away with FCFA 3 million being goods bought for the handicapped, needy persons and some associations.
The Post learned that the Minister of Social Affairs, Susan Mbomback, had allocated this amount for Kumba. It was also said that she was supposed to stop in Kumba on February 26, en route to Mundemba, as part of her tour of the Southwest Province.
According to Aaron Nimbom Yong, Meme Divisional Delegate of Social Affairs, the money stolen and the entire damage of his Delegation during could be valued at FCFA 25 million.
He said money was kept in their office since an inspection team from Yaounde was expected on February 26, to assess the level of preparation prior to the Minister's arrival.
The Delegate added that it was for this reason that his Chief of Centre, Georgette Nyoum, carefully arranged the money and gifts in her office on February 25 for distribution.
Nimbom lamented that when the strike began on Monday, Nyoum decided to keep the money in her office rather than take it home for fear she might be attacked. But the money was stolen all the same from the office.
He said bags of rice, trucks, cell phones and spaghetti were equally stolen. He was optimistic that the Ministry would allocate some money for the rearrangement of Mbomback's stopover.
