Nairobi — Details of how militia groups planned and attacked people during the post-election violence were revealed yesterday.
In Eldoret attacks on Kikuyu homes were planned by local leaders.
As one Kalenjin elder present at organising meetings explained to Human Rights Watch: "[The elders] said that if there is any sign that Kibaki is winning, then the war should break They were coaching the young people how to go on the war [sic]."
A young Kikuyu involved in reprisal attacks on Luos in Naivasha also pointed to the role of local leaders in organising the violence.
"This was not done by ordinary citizens, it was arranged by people with money; they bought the jobless like me. We need something to eat each day," he told the human rights group.
The human rights group says even before President Kibaki was officially declared the winner, parts of the province erupted in widespread inter-ethnic violence.
The report says the delays in the counting of votes and rampant rumours about the imminent rigging of the election sparked attacks primarily directed at members of the Kikuyu ethnic group.
The report titled Ballots to Bullets says in Eldoret Town, many Kalenjin politicians stoked ethnic tensions to mobilise political support among their kinsmen, a tactic, the report says, is familiar to Kenyan politics.
Citing one of many typical examples, it is reported that a rally in the Soy area in Uasin Gishu District heard that, if elected, a certain party would "remove the roots" of particular communities "so there would be only one tribe there." The Kikuyu were commonly referred to as "snake."
"They did not see the repercussions of this," says the report.
Largely as a result of this ethnic rhetoric, many locals, the report adds, believed that once elected, their party would find a way to redistribute most or all land owned by the people considered outsiders.
"Human Rights Watch interviewed several leaders involved in anti-Kikuyu violence who said they were merely doing by force what they had been denied a chance to do through the ballot box," the report states.
FM stations were also accused of echoing such words and being used as a platform for inflammatory ethnic rhetoric.
"There is no clear evidence that the same stations actively sought to disseminate hate speech, but that did not prevent guests from using the airwaves to do so. Language was usually highly idiomatic, but its meaning was clear to the audience."
The lobby says divisive campaigning did not by itself cause existing ethnic tensions to boil over into violence. But in the days prior to the election, local elders in many communities around Eldoret called meetings where they declared that electoral victory for President Kibaki would be the signal for "war" against local Kikuyu.
"They told community members a PNU victory should be seen as conclusive proof of electoral fraud and that all Kikuyu were complicit in it," says the report, that also claims many people were coerced into attending attack-related meetings.
Intimidation
"In several communities people who did not attend the meetings were threatened with the destruction of their own homes. And at the meetings, an atmosphere of intimidation made it very difficult to speak out in opposition to the planned violence," the report says.
Tensions over land ownership the report says, have long been a source of mistrust and violence around Eldoret. Those tensions were exacerbated by the sharp ethnic lines drawn between opposing camps during the 2007 electoral campaign.
After the initial attacks, the reports adds, there was a series of ethnic-based reprisal attacks in other parts of the country, targeting other ethnic communities seen as broadly supportive of the opposition.
"In some areas, residents attempted to make a stand and defend their homes. These attempts were mostly unsuccessful. In most cases, the attackers were many and organized and easily overwhelmed the small number of farmers who sought to resist them," says the group.
It adds: "In at least one case, groups of those under siege carried out brutal reprisal attacks during the initial bout of post-election chaos. On the evening of December 31 in Langas, an Eldoret neighbourhood populated primarily by the Kikuyu, the mobs killed and beheaded several Luos and left their severed heads lying on the road."
As displaced people fled south from Eldoret towards the towns of Molo, Nakuru, and Naivasha in the southern Rift Valley and into Central Province, the traditional territory of the Kikuyu, they brought with them brutal stories of burning, looting, rape and murder.
Their stories, Human Rights Watch says, helped to stoke tensions among their kinsmen in these other towns. Local leaders and the Kikuyu elite there and in Nairobi reacted by organising to contribute money for "self-defence" forces, it says.
The group however found no evidence directly implicating the top ODM leadership in these events.
However, all the victims, it says, blamed a particular MP for the
attacks because of his strong rhetoric prior to the election. The report says that in mid to late January nearly all people interviewed in Rift Valley said the fight would have ended if the particular leader had ordered a stop.
The group says the total killed during the clashes in Naivasha was 41. It says 23 were burned to death, including 13 children. Seven victims were shot dead by police and the rest killed with machetes.
It adds that there were four victims of forced male circumcision treated at the hospital, all of whom survived.
Mungiki leaders
On revenge, the group accuses traders and politicians.
"Before the revenge attacks, the town of Nakuru had escaped the violence that had engulfed much of the Rift Valley. Although the surrounding countryside was deeply affected, especially by the long-running conflicts in Kuresoi and around Molo, Nakuru town had been quiet. That changed on January 24."
"Mungiki leaders told how local businessmen and politicians met at a local hotel on January 24 to organise themselves," the report says.
Nakuru Provincial Hospital confirmed that the victims of the clashes were from all ethnic groups. The hospital's mortuary reported 56 deaths, while the municipal mortuary recorded 105 separate deaths.

And who produced the report anyway? And how thoroughly researched was it? For instance, did the researcher investigate the activities of members and sponsors of the terrorist Mungiki - supporters of Mwai Kibaki and Uhuru Kenyatta - before and after the elections 2007? [Probably not - unless the researcher had a way of quickly breaking through the fetters that bind the criminals into fearful silence after the sect's macabre oath taking. Even Ian Henderson and Bernard Ruck took a while and a lot of guts to break into the original Mau Mau sect.]
In fact, while the Kibaki and his band of election saboteurs were planning their criminal acts of rigging the election results, they were aware that such sabotage may bring about chaos. How did they prepare for it? Did these saboteurs see the ensuing chaos as an excuse for eliminating those who oppose them and their corrupt expansionist designs on Kenyans?
So the report is at best lopsided and at worst, the works of a Mungiki functionary or foreign sympathizer.
Why are Kikuyu in Rift Valley? Western? Coast? .. For starters, before the elections 2007, the GEMA's Central Province harboured hardly any Kalenjin or Luo or Luhya or any other tribes not indeginopus to the area. And the recent ethnic cleansing by Kibaki's murderous Mungiki sect, even those who worked in the urban centers in GEMA's Central province are no more.
So why do Mungiki's darling Kibaki and his GEMA want access to other people's ancestral lands?
Why does Kibaki's troops kill wazalendo who, like the Kikuyu under Dedan Kimathi, would claim their ancestral lands from invaders? Do they expect to keep their own and harness other people's lands and resources as well? And kill those, like the Sabaot, who would resist?
Is the Tutsi strategy of ethnic cleansing in Rwanda working in Kenya for the GEMA? There are similarities: For instance, the virulent killers (GEMA/Tutsi-supported by foreigners) would parade as the innocent victims of those they have victimized for decades(non-GEMA/Hutu).
There was a time when European invaders supremacist attitudes very similar to those harbored by Kibaki and his GEMA. And for generations, they strode and raped and plundered the lands' human and natural resources unchallenged.
Maybe the strident, murderous, corrupt Gikuyu/Embu/Meru ought to be confined to their ancestral area around their Mumbi's Mt. Kirinyaga - if the world community and the non-GEMA Kenyans envision a cessation of vicious bloodletting brought about by the acquisitive, corrupt, tribalist and belligerent GEMA of terrorists.
There was a time when European invaders supremacist attitudes very similar to those harboured by Kibaki and his GEMA.
Prepare for your GEMA Bantustan of the cursed. You are the cleverer Kenyans. Let us see how you will fare - without the rest of Kenya to victimize.
After a search, the following facts come to light:
1) The newspaper story from which The Nation newspaper draws heavily has the following information : "..special correspondent Munene Kilongi contributed." 2) The following caveat also appears: That for the report "Human Rights Watch(HRW) interviewed several leaders involved in ANTI-KIKUYU violence" Why did they restrict their investigation to "anti-Kikuyu violence"? Are they aware that there was rampant "anti-Luo violence"? and "anti-Kamba violence"? And the still on-going 'anti-Kalenjin' violence?
Indeed, most acts of violence after the elections 2007 were unleashed by the terrorist Mungiki supporters of Mwai Kibaki and Uhuru Kenyatta against Kenyans that are NOT members of Mwai Kibaki's ethnic group in various parts of Kenya. A prior report from HRW stated as follows: "Reprisal attacks by Kikuyu militia in the towns of Naivasha and Nakuru were also not spontaneous. "PNU [Party of National Unity] mobilizers and local businessmen called meetings, raised funds, and directed youth in their attacks on non-Kikuyus and their homes,"the HRW report stated UN Integrated Regional Information Networks, Nairobi, Kenya, 17 March 2008.
Yet, only the less gory retaliatory violence against the Kikuyu seems to bother this paper. Can it be that this paper, The Nation, has got an ulterior motive - to promote a supremacist GEMA directive?

There is a shortage of resources in your central province and so you would plunder other people's resources and denigrate them too ... CLEVER. So you have multiplied like Nzige while the rest of Kenya's societies wither. Whose problem is that? Do you think that other Kenyans - the non-GEMA damned ones - owe you a living? Trust an evil mind to hatch evil schemes. And one evil mind in Kenya towers well above others. You may remember a person named Kamau wa Ngengi - aka John Peter - aka Johnstone Kamau. When he was not waltzing, wining and womanizing in a foreign land, he read some anthropology books that planted an idea in his scheming mind. He learnt that when some species are favoured with plenty of food and resources their successive generations multiply in numbers faster than those that are not thus favoured (by adaptation). So when he became prezzo (and called himself Jomo Kenyatta) he went about favouring his tribesmen, the GEMA, and impoverishing other Kenyans with hitlerian gusto. Of course, increased poipulation would demand more of the resources of Kenyans - in addition to expanding into territories not indeginous to the GEMA. Did Kenyatta envision that the rest of Kenyans will accommodate the invading hordes of the overpopulated GEMA? Did he expect that at some point the GEMA would curl themselves so as to acommodate the just demands of other Kenyans for a fair share of Kenya's limited resources - or did he expect his GEMA to overrun Kenya? We suspect that his tribalist, supremacist mentality was tuned to the later scenario. Although there is a danger that we may read too much into his intellect. And thus in a span of barely over two generations, the GEMA multiplied like Nnzi. Mission accomplished - except for the expansionist bit that has not been completed yet. For that, we will consult the unfolding and yet to be completed Rwanda story. Looking into the future: Will a GEMA adapted to survival by cronyism, tribalism and corruption and murder thrive in a Kenya devoid of those priviledges that have characterized their population explosion and expansionist virulence? The GEMA must be contained. They will have to re-adapt to a future without John_Peter privileges or disappear. 2) The GEMA must be contained. But, Worry Not, dear Mungiki: There is still plenty of space in Central Kenya for your GEMA brood. The population density aroung Mt. Kenya is hardly 200 people per square kilomile as compared to over 6000 people per square mile in Hong Kong and over 23,000 in Monaco. And your GEMA is just as resourceful - so you would have the rest of Kenyans believe. You still have plenty of elbow room in Central province for your GEMA Bantustan.
Yes you said it kikuyus should be contained. That what you set out to do after the elections but i can see the mission has not been accomplished. When are you going to restart the ethinic cleansing. What does a kikuyu whose only crime is that he bought 3 acre piece of land from a willing buyer got to do with tribalism corruption etc? Have you just forgotten who brought down Kenya economy on it knees? Four 24 years kikuyus were nowhere near the government, that when the economy was going downhill. This is what we have been saying all along. Even raila became hostage to kalenjin forces that is why he had to appoint sally kosgey and william ruto to go and negotiate on behalf of odm so that whatever they agreed they wont blame him. The mayhem as just been suspended for now. Remembver kalenjin swore that they will drive kikuyus out of rift valley all together.
