Cameroon: Civil Protection Report Launched

The 2007/2008 report is produced at the end of a year which was marked by risks and emergencies of diverse origins.

The fifth publication of the report on the state of civil protection in Cameroon was officially launched in Yaounde last Friday. The event which was organised by the Department of Civil Protection in collaboration with the Ministry of Territorial Administration saw the participation of members of government, representatives of the diplomatic corps well as international organisations.

Speaking during the launching, the Minister Delegate in the Ministry of Territorial Administration, Emmanuel Edou, said the 2007/2008 report constitutes the main point in this year's celebration of the International Day for Civil Protection. According to him, the event constitutes a significant moment in government's action as far as risk management is concerned. The audience watched some demonstrations on first aid techniques by a team from the Department of Civil Protection. In effect the report is the fifth in a series initiated in 2003. The 2008 report is produced at the end of a year which was marked by risks and emergencies of diverse origins. The 2007 report on catastrophes has among others; the Kenyan Airways crash coupled with the increase in road or maritime accidents, and persistent migrations that have left the country in a state of emergency.

The theme for this year's report "Security at work" focuses on the working age group who are more exposed to risks. The present document, which has four titles and 24 chapters, also gives an account of a major evolution which is part of government's strategy in Cameroon. The document has some important actions of government such as the assistance to victims of diverse catastrophes in the national territory such as flood victims in Mokolo and Kolofata, interethnic conflicts in the North West and the Far North Provinces. Also, the deployment of a huge delegation of members of government on the site of the Kenya Airways crash at Mbanga Pongo as well as government initiatives in peace-keeping zones of victims interethnic conflicts. The fifth annual report on civil protection in Cameroon covers almost all sectors of activity. The annual bouquet of catastrophes in Cameroon in 2007does not only has classic calamities but also a new phenomenon which has to do with trances in schools. The Minister used the occasion to thank national and international partners who have contributed in the success of civil protection in Cameroon.
