Ethiopia: Forum Deliberates On 'Diversify of Unity in Federal Countries'

Addis Ababa — The Forum of Federation has put the agenda of global dialogue on 'Diversity of unity in Federal Countries' on Friday which is said to be an important issue in the development of Federalism in Ethiopia.

Speaker of the House of Federation Degefe Bula send out his message through his representative at the discussion forum here in Addis that some efforts have been made to strengthen Federalism in Ethiopia and said both the government and the people were ready to learn from those who are in a better position regarding the issue.

He also disclosed government plan to host the fifth international conference on Federalism by the year 2010 jointly with forum of Federation.

The discussion forum was jointly organized by the forum, Addis Ababa University and Ethiopian Civil Service College.

The Forum of Federation runs major international conferences providing opportunity for practitioners of federalism, academics and NGOs to interact and learn from one another.

Ethiopia became the eighth member of the Forum of federation in December, 2006. As a young still-emerging federation, the country faces special challenges on the issue.

Forum staffs are currently collaborating with Ethiopian academics to create a new Institute of Federalism at the country's premier university, the Addis Ababa University.

The forum is also working actively with the House of Federation and the Ministry of Federal affairs. The forum partners include Australia, Austria, Canada, Ethiopia, Germany, India, Mexico, Nigeria and Switzerland.

The Forum is holding a range of roundtable events in each member country by local coordinators and representatives from concerned local institutions after which participants will engage in an international dialogue, responding to questions, learning about new trends and comparing their experiences with different countries.

Then lessons from the dialogue processes would be published on books and booklets, according to forum officials.
