Ethiopia secured on Wednesday the most awaited EU accreditation to export honey to European markets.

This was known at a round table forum held at the King's Hotel organized by the Netherlands Development Organization and the Royal Netherlands Embassy in Ethiopia who initiated and extended financial support under the Business Organization and their Access to Markets (BOAM) program.

"This is the great achievement which will benefit all the actors in the honey value chain: exporters, processors, producers, and input suppliers," SNV Ethiopia Country Director Rem Neefjes speaking on the occasion.

"The export market to the EU is open for honey and honey products. Looking at the export markets already developed, the private sector operators, an estimated number of 10,000 smallholder beekeepers will directly benefit, he added.

The forum brought together officials from the NDO, the Royal Netherlands Embassy, and representatives from the Ethiopian Honey Beeswax Process Exporters Association (EHBPEA), and the honey and beeswax coordination group.

The latter is a working team organized by the BOAM program of the Netherlands Development Organization and made up of several private and public organizations and institutions.

The group undertook a number of notable tasks related with the development of the sector in the country.

Among those are the preparation of residue monitoring plan which was a prerequisite for obtaining EU accreditation for Ethiopian honey, preparation of honey mapping, training of farmer beekeepers, conducting various researches aimed at solving the major bottlenecks of the apiculture sector, promotion of the Ethiopian honey at local and international markets.

SNV Netherlands Development Organization is an international development agency working world wide in 33 countries. For more than 30 years in Ethiopia. The main field of operation is capacity building of local organizations.

The Netherlands NGO currently focuses on activities on water, sanitation & hygiene, on biogas and especially on PSD: improving access to markets and increasing income for smallholder farmers.
