Botswana: Top Athletes for the Gph Race

Francistown — Botswana's top long distance athletes are expected to take part in this (March 16) Sunday's 10 kilometer Road Race sponsored by the Gaborone Private Hospital, in conjunction with the Gaborone Runners Club.

The race will be run over a distance of 10 kilometers, starting and finishing at the GPH. Some of the country's top athletes, including Kabo Gabaseme, Onkometse Solotate, Kaelo Motsalagae and Moswasi Keinetse, are expected to compete.

A press release from Ad-vantage Priority Media stated that the distance, however, was restricted in order to attract a large entry of social runners and walkers in what organisers hope will be a fun event as well as a competitive race.

"In addition there is also a disabled category to enable the blind and amputees to participate. The race will be the first in a planned annual event and spectators and supporters will be welcome."

GPH has put up prize money of P6000 to be shared amongst the winners in both male and female categories of adult, junior and disabled.

The race is seen as one way to encourage people of all ages and fitness levels to take more exercise. The hospital will be setting up stalls in the GPH car park where participants can have their blood pressure and cholesterol levels checked, as well as receiving advice from pharmacists and medical staff on nutrition, exercise and healthy living. Entry fee for the event is P25, which is part of the fund-raising for charity.
