Kanye North legislator Calvin Batsile has fulfilled his pledge to give Miss Botswana, Itseng Kgomotso a cow as a present.

The MP made good on his word yesterday at the Kanye main Kgotla during a visit by the beauty queen. Kgomotso visited her home village, Kanye and met with the elders at the Kgotla. Although she was happy at the way the elders received her, Kgomotso expressed her disappointment that the youth snubbed her meeting.

"I have to thank all those who are here today to welcome me back home because it shows the support you have for me but I am really disappointed that the youth are not present because I thought they should be the ones more interested in meeting me," she said. She thanked Batsile for the present saying it would go a long way in helping her fulfill her duties as the reigning beauty queen by helping elderly people around the country.

After getting the crown, Kgomotso pledged to work hard to ensure that elderly people receive help and those who are poor are given the necessary support.

Yesterday, the beauty queen told Showbiz that despite all the challenges that she has to overcome, she would not be deterred to in achieving her dreams of seeing elderly people live a better life. "I have not been able to fully concentrate on my duties as Miss Botswana because I have been busy with my studies but we are closing next month and I will dedicate all my time to that cause," Kgomotso said.

She noted that unlike other beauty queens before her who concentrated on HIV/AIDS, she has been touched especially by the plight of the elderly. "It is unfortunate that often when we talk about these socio-economic problems, we tend to focus only on the problems facing the youth and we shift our focus completely from what is happening to our grannies. There was nothing wrong with the other queens concentrating on AIDS because it is a major problem facing our country but these old people need to be looked after," she said. She added that currently it is very cold and rainy and most old people do not have a proper roof over their heads.

Kgomotso said she hopes to convince companies to partner with her to help the aged. She would not just depend on donations but is looking at other ways of raising funds like sponsored walks. "Maybe I will be lucky enough to have some companies agree to build houses for some of the old people I will identify," she said.

When donating the cow Batsile called on other Batswana to follow his example especially Kgomotso's people Bangwaketse. "We have been very lucky when it comes to beauty queens in this village and it is now up to us to support them so that we can encourage potential future queens to enter and perhaps keep on bringing the crown this side," Batsile said.
