Huambo — The health authorities in Angola's central Huambo province Tuesday here declared a cholera outbreak in the provincial capital city, following the death in the last five days of nine people at Bom Pastor suburb, Angop learned today.
Huambo city health director, Jaime David Muenhombo, said the samples sent to the national laboratory of public health, in Luanda, indicate the existence of a cholera epidemics, at a time the cases of the disease tend to rise in the surrounding areas of the provincial capital.
According to the source, Huambo health authorities are carrying out an awareness campaign with the populations, seeking to prevent the spread of the disease in the areas affected. The operation includes the supply of drinking water.
Jaime David Muenhombo said as well a centre for treatment of the disease has been opened in Humabo Central Hospital, where 21 cases have been recorded. According to him, there are medicines and other means to control the spread and treat the disease in the region.
