Nigeria: Commissioner Challenges Officials On Avian Flu

19 March 2008

Bauchi — Commissioner for Information in Bauchi State, Dr Bukar Bukata, has challenged officials of the Avian Influenza Control Programme to evolve strategies to eradicate the disease.

Bukata challenged the officials in Bauchi at the opening of a two-day workshop for the programme's communication desk officers.

He said elaborate campaign measures were necessary to create awareness about the disease among poultry owners, communities, traders and animal health professionals.

"The importance of communication officers in creating awareness about Avian Flu cannot be overemphasised because of the fear of the possibility of human transmission of the virus.

"I call on all stakeholders to be vigilant and more committed in the fight against the disease," he said.

The commissioner, represented by the permanent secretary, Alhaji Baba Madugu, commended government at all levels for supporting the project.

He said the project had made significant progress in the fight against the disease in the past two years.

Also speaking, the Bauchi desk officer for the project, Dr Muhammad Bello, said the workshop was organised in conjunction with UNICEF and that participants were drawn from 28 states.
