Kachwekano Zonal Agricultural Research and Development Institute has asked the Government to increase funding for their activities. A scientist at the Kabale-based institute, Dr. William Wagoire, made the appeal on Saturday, while meeting the agriculture committee of Parliament.

Wagoire said the late release of funds was greatly affecting their work, which is seasonal. "We do not work like other government departments. We work in seasons and appeal to you to ensure that money is released in time."

The director, Dr. Imelda Kashaija, said the institute develops and avails appropriate technology in potatoes, fruits, wheat and barley growing. She added that they also develop partnerships with other organisations to disseminate the technology in order to fight poverty and increase food security.

The institute, Kashaija said, faces other challenges like under-staffing and limited storage facilities. The MPs, led by Deus Bikwasizehi, have been on a national tour of government-funded agricultural programmes.
