Kano — Takai and Sumaila local governments of Kano State will soon enjoy an N500 million worth irrigation project, member representing Takai/Sumaila federal constituency at the National House of Representatives, Alhaji Sulaiman Abdulrahman Kawu has said.
Speaking while distributing relief materials to the victims of last year flood disaster in Sumaila, Kawu Sumaila said that already a total of N50 million has been released for the design and feasibility study of the project. Alhaji Sulaiman further stated that when completed the irrigation project will immensely enhance irrigation farming in the area, noting that government has realised that the project will impact positive development to the people of the area since their major occupation is farming.
He also disclosed that another sum of N250m has been included in the federal government's budget for executing a water project in Sumaila local government. The lawmaker said a total of N40 million will also be spent on the education sector in the constituency just to comply with millennium development goals, adding that more will be spent on health and water in the area.
Alhaji Kawu Sumaila explained that additional N200 million is expected to be spent on construction of boreholes and hand pumps across the constituency with a view to enhancing water supply in the area. Commenting on the relief materials, Alhaji Kawu stated that the materials worth over N15m were sourced from the National Emergency Management Agency NEMA. He added that the materials include assorted grains that comprises of rice, maize, millet, sorghum, roofing sheets, plastic containers, cements and mats among other things.
He told the recipients that the materials are meant to alleviate their suffering from the last year flood disaster, urging them to make good use of the materials given to them by the federal government relief agency.
