The World Bank Monday said that Nigeria was yet to access about $180 million grant made available by the bank to help the country's education sector reform, an official of the bank has said.

This was revealed during a presentation at a workshop in Abuja by Mrs Mercy Agunbiade, the Head of the Monitoring and Evaluation Unit, Science and Technology Education Post Basic (STEP-B), a World Bank project.

She said that all the proposals were unable to meet the requirements set for accessing the funds. She added that if the funds are not claimed, Nigeria will lose the funds to other countries that need it. The official said that out of the 100 proposals received only 18 have gotten approval, but are yet to get the funds. She noted that most of the proposals do not address national priorities like poverty alleviation, generation of employment opportunities/ entrepreneurship, create wealth in abundance and diversify the economy, among others.

She added that these lamentations and bottle heads can be resolved by the education sector if well implemented and planned. Mrs Agunbiade explained that the bank had to come up with a plan to assist the country in accessing the funds which culminated to the STEP -B project. She said that the STEP-B will help the Nigerian federal post basic education and research sub-sector produce better qualified science and technology graduates and better research work.

She explained that in the project, quality enhancement and innovation will gulp $81million; the emergence of centres of excellence will get $54million; and support for sector-wide initiative will get $27million.
