Namibia: Unam Prof Appointed On SA Science Body

The University of Namibia's Pro-Vice Chancellor, Academic Affairs and Research, Prof. Osmund Mwandemele, has been appointed to serve on the South African Ministry of Science and Technology's Advisory Committee on Indigenous Knowledge Systems (IKS) for the Development of Science and Technology.

He had been appointed by South African Science and Technology Minister, Mosibudi Mangena, it was announced in a press statement by Unam.

The committee will provide expert advice on matters relating to IKS and effective implementation of policy, as well as actively determine the demand for appropriate intervention on IKS related issues. Prof. Mwandendele's appointment is a part-time one and runs for a period of three years.

The learned academic was the founding director of Unam's Sam Nujoma Marine and Coastal Resources Research Centre in Henties Bay and the founding dean of Unam's Agriculture & Natural Resources Faculty.

He completed his Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Dar es Salaam in 1976 followed by a Masters Degree in 1978 at the same institution.

He then enrolled for a PhD degree with the University of Sidney in Australia, which he completed in 1983. Prof. Mwandemele has a proven track record of academic accomplishments, administrative leadership and the ability to confront new challenges facing higher education.

He has 30 years of teaching and research experience at university level. Of these 18 years were in various senior university management and administration levels, including:

- Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Science at the University of Dar es Salaam from 1988 to 1990;

- Professor and Director of the Graduate School at Egerton University in Njoro, Kenya from 1990 to 1995;

- Founding Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture & Natural Resources of the University of Namibia from 1995 to 2004.
