Bidco Oil Refineries has embarked on a campaign to promote sunflower farming among small-scale growers in various parts of the country.

The company's team leader in charge of Elianto Division, Mr Dileswar Pradhan, said the company would offer technical support and hold public meetings to encourage farmers in Rift Valley, Western, Nyanza and Eastern provinces to grow the crop.

"We will spend over Sh1 million to promote the growth of sunflower in various parts of the country," he said. He said the company had paid Sh220 million to farmers for 12,000 metric tonnes of sunflower seeds delivered since 2001.

The company had already entered into partnership with Drumnet, a project of Pride Africa, to help farmers get financial assistance to plant the crop.

Drumnet has over the years helped small-scale farmers access markets, finance, and information services.

Through the partnership, farmers would be trained and receive credit for seeds and farm inputs from certified suppliers through Equity Bank.

Pradhan said the company was keen to promote the growth of sunflower locally to meet its growing demand instead of relying on imports.
