Kenya: Council Votes to Triple Mayor's Salary

Nairobi — The Mombasa municipal Council on Wednesday unanimously voted to increase the mayor's salary by more than two hundred per cent.

The council proposed to raise the Mayor's salary to Sh200,000 from Sh70,000 while his deputy is set to earn Sh100,000. The proposals were made at a special finance committee meeting.

Mayor Ahmed Modhar did not attend the meeting but the proposal will have to be approved by the Minister for Local Government before it can be implemented.

Speaking at his office, the Town clerk, Mr Wisdom Mwamburi, said the increment was aimed at making the post more competitive, improve service delivery and motivate the recipient.

"Residents should not worry about the increment as it will not affect service delivery of the council in any way," Mr Mwamburi said.

He said the council was building a school at Ziwa la Ngombe funded by the Kenya Slum Upgrading Programme at the tune of Sh14, million.

Mr Mwamburi said that the proposal was not a new venture but a repeat of what the previous council had tried to implement but failed.

He said that the town's mayor earned less council bosses in other towns despite his heavier responsibilities.

Mayor's in smaller local authorities were earning a similar amount or even more.

"The proposal is however subject to approval by the Minister for Local government who can either endorse or reject it," he said.

The meeting was the first to be held by the council since elections.
