Corporal Bakary Bojang, a police officer attached to serious crime unit, has testified in the on going criminal trial of Lieutenant Bakary Camara, Superintendent Manlafi Sanyang and Domenico Fideli, on Tuesday, 18 March, before Magistrate Olagubutu Kayode of the Banjul Magistrates' Court.
In his testimony, Corporal Bojang recalled on the 21 January that he and his senior man ASP Ebrima Jammeh left Banjul for Brufut to investigate the matter. He said that he was told by ASP Jammeh that there is one Domemico Fideli who wanted to sell a government vehicle. He noted that they were communicating with Mr. Fideli but that they could not trace his residence. Corporal Bojang indicated that ASP Jammeh asked Mr. Fideli to meet them on the high way, upon which they went together to Mr. Fidelis' house. He asserted that they introduced themselves to him; that they heard information that he (Fideli) wanted to sell a government vehicle.
Bojang indicated that ASP Jammeh asked Mr. Fideli to come with them to the police station. He said that the vehicle in question is a "corando" vehicle with the registration number BJL 4063B. Corporal Bojang stated that Mr. Fideli told them that the vehicle was given to him by Lieutenant Bakary Camara as a gift. Bojang indicated that Mr. Fideli produced a transfer of ownership of the vehicle; that it was Superintendent Manlafi Sanyang who processed the transfer for him. Corporal Bojang noted that Mr. Fideli told him that it was Manlafi Sanyang who asked him to go to the police headquarters to process the transfer of ownership of the vehicle. Going further, he said, he then collected the transfer of ownership from Mr. Fideli and later cautioned him in English. He said the process was witnessed by an independent witness. He asserted that Mr. Fideli wrote his own statement and signed it. The said cautionary statement was tendered in court and marked as exhibit B.
Lieutenant Camara, Superintendent Sanyang and Domenico Fideli are standing trial for alleged conspiracy and theft. Lieutenant Camara is singly charged for giving false information to a public officer. They all pleaded not guilty.
