Namibian actresses and theatre activists are invited to take part in a five-day Women in Theatre workshop to be held at the Katutura Community Arts Centre from April 28 to May 2.
This was announced in a press statement from Zimbabwe.
Jasen Mphepo is the executive director of Patsimeredu Edutainment Trust, a Theatre for Development organisation addressing social issues such as HIV and Aids and gender through theatre.
He is also an actor who has featured in such plays as The Play of Giants, Super Patriots and Morons. These plays have toured countries in the region and overseas. Besides acting, Jasen has also written, directed and produced a 13-pisode television series titled 'Suburb D', and recently a short film called 'Mudiwa'. He also works closely with community theatre groups for whom he undertakes capacity building programmes on HIV and Aids, gender, and performing arts. He has trained women in performing arts in seven countries on HIV and Aids and performing arts.
Cleopatra Ndlovu is a women's rights activist working in partnership with Patsime as a Project Manager for the Women In Performing Arts Project. She also works as a consultant training women in Gender, HIV and Aids and human rights.
In this line of work she has done a lot of training workshops with rural and urban communities as well as organisations.
Up to now she has also trained women in performing arts in seven countries on Gender, HIV and Aids and Human Rights. Cleopatra also sits on the Women and Aids Support Network Board of Trustees.
The objectives of the women in performing arts project are aimed at increasing knowledge levels on gender, HIV and Aids and human rights among women in performing arts.
- Equip participants with the skills to integrate gender, HIV and Aids and human rights in the arts.
- Bring women in the performing arts together to share experiences.
This capacity building initiative has been conducted in seven other countries, namely Zimbabwe, Swaziland, Lesotho, Malawi, Botswana, South Africa and Zambia. Namibia will be the eighth and last country in which this workshop will be held.
In each of these countries 15 women in performing arts were trained on Gender, HIV and AIDS, Human Rights and Performing Arts. These workshops are being conducted in order to increase the knowledge levels on the issues at hand so that artists can in turn contribute towards addressing them through their performances.

In May, Patsime will in conjunction with other stakeholders organize a regional workshop in which each of the eight countries will be represented by two female performing artists. The aim of the regional workshop will be for the female artists to share experiences at regional level and for the to discuss such issues as establishing a regional body for women in
performing arts.
Namibian actresses and theatre activists interested can contact David Ndjavera at 277300 to register for the workshop.
