Nigeria: Council Chairmen's Wives Protest Marginalisation By Women

Wives of local government chairmen yesterday in Abuja protested against being 'marginalised' at the on-going first Nigerian women leaders conference on Peace Building and Conflict Resolution.
They said the failure of the organisers of the workshop to allow them to present a goodwill message was a form of marginalisation.
The spokesperson of the group, Mrs Ugwu Ani, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the conference was incomplete without contribution from them.
"When we are talking about the grassroots, we are the ones that would carry the message down to them", Ani said.
She said the group sent a 40-member delegation to the conference but unfortunately, it was not given opportunity to air its views.
"Our husbands are the ones working at the grassroots, where the impact of what is being said here should be felt.," Ani said.

She said the failure of the organisers of the conference to carry them along meant that nothing has been done.
"How would people know what happens at the grassroots and if the people at the grassroots are not heard, it means that this country still has a long way to go", she said.
NAN reports the minister of Women Affairs, Hayaji Saudatu Bungudu, in the course of the conference, held a closed door meeting with the wives of state governors.(NAN)
